I also believe in the good intent that each user has in this fine project. Therefore, I would ask users who post messages in the discussion board, to respect certain rules:
  • Please do not post abusive messages. Please post messages in a manner that you yourself would like to be adressed in. Messages deemed abusive or with a rude tone, condescension, nonsense or un-P.C. content will be deleted from this board [2]. Users who continuously disrespect these guidelines will be asked not to post here anymore.
  • Please post a message in neutral letters. Do not post a message in bold or CAPITALISED letters. It is unnecessary.

Agatha Christie bio edit

[edit]

Hi Gryffindor,

Thanks for the recent addition of the link to 'Dame' on the Agatha Christie bio page. As the link is also provided above Agatha's picture to the right on that page I'm hoping you would agree to leave the initial 'Dame' in the text unlinked please - I think it just looks better to have that initial presentation of her full name and title all in bold and unlinked. What do you think?

In this context, the same could be said for the linked 'DBE' which also appears with the picture and is also essentially linked later in the first paragraph of the page. Can we remove that link in the first line of the bio too? RLO1729 (talk) 19:53, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion for Jō-an

[edit]

Hello! You moved this page from "Jo-an (teahouse)" back in 2017 -- this appears to be an error, because the reading is じょあん (syllables: jo-a-n), not じょうあん (syllables: jo-o-a-n). I wanted to make you aware of this, in case for example you had the misconception that everywhere "jo" appears it should be "jō". Imaginatorium (talk) 04:50, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sanskrit terms in common use in English

[edit]

Hi, I note your recent edits. The criterion for using italics for a term is that it is definitely seen as foreign rather than English. This means that terms borrowed from other languages which are in wide use and effectively assimilated into English, like Divan (Persian), Chaise longue (French), Influenza (Italian), Yoga and Asana (Sanskrit) and so on are not italicised. Etymology alone is no guide to this: English has thousands of once-foreign words in its dictionaries. I do hope this is clear. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:27, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chiswick,

The rule is stated here MOS:FOREIGNITALIC. Asana is not a term that is generally known or understood in English, unlike words like pizza or spaghetti despite their non-English origins. Thank you. Gryffindor (talk) 17:33, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gryffindor, I know the rule, but Asana is a well-known term in English and has been in rather wide use for at least the past 50 years, if not 100 (Ngram). Merriam-Webster assures me that the term was first used in English in 1811, indeed, and since the advance of modern postural yoga from the 1920s by Yogendra, Kuvalayananda and others, it has become very familiar. Sanskrit terms adopted into English and widely used are not subject to MOS Foreign

[edit]

Hi, and thank you for your efforts to standardise word formatting on Wikipedia; many of your edits are certainly helpful.

However, there are numerous terms in Yoga and Hinduism that have been widely used for many years, and can be found in the major English dictionaries (such as Oxford, Merriam-Webster).

For instance, Brahmin has been used in English for centuries; from the 15th century as "Brahman", from the early 19th as "Brahmin".

I have previously explained this kind of usage to you, and the logic involved: when a term is widely used in English, it is no longer "foreign" whatever its etymology.

To save having the same discussion at 100 yoga pages, let's discuss this please at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Yoga.

I am sorry to say that repeated application of your approach, given that you have been told the matter is, to say the least, not agreed with other editors, is becoming disruptive. I will revert those of your edits that are clearly contrary to policy because the words are no longer "foreign", and hope very much that you will understand the reason for this. Many thanks for your co-operation. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:38, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:German crafts requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Delhi, a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

User generated content

[edit]

Hi Gryffindor,

Wikipedia's "General Disclaimer" explains an issue that is also relevant to other user-generated websites, such as Fandom/Wikia. While the YouTube links, coming from the official channel of the series, might be fine as primary sources, the Fandom links appear to be unsuitable as references (WP:USERG/WP:RSP). The main issue with the YouTube links is probably their unsuitability to prove if Yu-Gi-Oh is really relevant to the Ikebana article. It would probably be easy to compile a huge list of series that contain Ikebana. Wikipedia, as a tertiary source, should ideally not rely purely on primary sources. Adding something to an article only because it appears in a TV series is likely unnecessary.

Thanks and best regards,

Hello, Gryffindor. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Kumagai Morikazu requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Edits to Japanese arts and culture pages

[edit]

Hi - I noticed you've recently conducted a lot of copyedits to various Japanese arts and culture pages, such as kimono and maiko.

These edits seem to be italicising words such as kimono, maiko and obi. However - as in MOS:FOREIGNITALIC - these words don't need italicising.

I appreciate your good faith edits, I really do, but these words all fall under loanwords that have common use enough not to be italicised. Some terms do - for example, furisode does in the kimono article, as it's not a common term and not well-recognised. But kimono doesn't. It's a well-acknowledged loan word. I think I've already spent time unitalicising some of the words in these pages before now, to be honest.

I'd really appreciate it if you could undo your edits, as I'm on mobile and genuinely cannot figure out how to.

I'm sorry to leave such a killjoy edit on your Talk page, but I had to say something. Thank you for your efforts anyway, though. They're appreciated and it's always nice to have someone else help out on those pages. --Ineffablebookkeeper (talk) 13:20, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be going mad adding these, even to uniquely English terms (Mezzotint) or those with uniquely English spellings (Aquatint). Please stop; it is nuisance having to revert them all. The article Hisato Nozawa has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable local politician

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. A tag has been placed on Category:Sport in Limousin requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

Hotel Nagoya Castle moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Hotel Nagoya Castle, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Italics

[edit]

What is the justification for italics? Can you point me to a policy? I was not under the impression that common nouns of foreign origin should be italicized in titles. To me, it is incongruous with the capital letter. It makes it look like a title. Srnec (talk) 22:34, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Came here wondering this as well and like Srnec I'm not convinced there is a need for any of the italics you've inserted. Organum in particular I've never seen italicized; Virelai, Ballade, Rondeau were never italicized in the sources I used to write F. Andrieu or Grimace. Additionally, by only italicizing the first sentence and title, you've created inconsistencies throughout the entirety of these various articles. Aza24 (talk) 00:04, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't made up my mind on the italics yet, but you've made a few musical instrument articles inconsistent with their brethren. Jacqke (talk) 00:50, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent editing history at Maria Theresa shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. On May 8th you created Aoi Oshitayashiki, citing a few Japanese sources. There was large overlap between machine translations of these sources and the article, in particular https://www.sumitomo-rd-mansion.jp/tokai/aoi/location03.html; here's a paragraph of the article compared to a machine translation of that source:

Article: The Higashi ward has prospered as a residence district lined with samurai houses since the Edo period. There are many temples, historical shrines, and sites connected to the Tokugawa family, and many business people and cultural people set up residence in this area east of Nagoya Castle.

The place name "Aoi" derives from the crest (mon) of the three-leaf aoi of the Tokugawa. The residence was built in 1679 under Tokugawa Mitsutomo (1625–1700), the second lord of the Owari Domain, stretching for about 64,000 tsubo as a place for rest and feasting. The vast estate featured a garden with a large pond and strolling paths in the south, with the residence in the centre, with another smaller garden with pond to the north. It was modified by successive lords from generation to generation to reflect the tastes of the times. In the era of the seventh lord Tokugawa Muneharu (1696–1764), a medicinal garden (Goyaku-en 御薬園) was established in the northwestern part to cultivate medicinal herbs such as ginseng.

Source translation: higashi ward has prospered as a residence district lined with samurai houses since the edo period. there are many temples, historical shrines, and temples connected to the tokugawa family, and many business people and cultural people have set up residences from the calm townscape, and the culture as a residential area has matured.

the place name of the address "aoi, higashi-ku" where this project is born is derived from the crest of the three-leaf aoi of the tokugawa family. in the past, this area was built in 1679 by mitsutomo tokugawa, the second lord of the owari domain, to build a vast "imperial residence" stretching for about 64,000 tsubo as a place for rest and feasting. the pond-spring strolling garden, which centers on the pond, has been modified by lords from generation to generation to reflect the tastes of the times. in the era of the 7th feudal lord, muneharu, there is also an episode in which a "medicinal garden" was established to cultivate medicinal herbs such as ginseng worshipped by the eighth shogun, yoshimune tokugawa.

Parts are directly copied, while others are closely phrased or are just rearranged. I understand that there is some confusion over whether or not translations of copyrighted material are still copyright violations (they are), but you have received some extensive advice and warning from Moonriddengirl back in 2014. These is also a CCI on you, Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Gryffindor has been open since October 2014, which has uncovered issues several issues, some of which date back to 2005. This has been a very long term issue, and I don't believe I have much choice other than blocking you in order to prevent future copyright violations. If you want to be unblocked, you must commit to no longer copying from sources and demonstrate a better understanding of copyright. Given the extent of issues here, I will notify the community at the administrators' noticeboard. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 22:12, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Hallo User:Moneytrees, I find this block unnecessarily harsh, a message would have sufficed. Concerning the issues you raised from 2014 these date back to almost 10 years ago now, I take these issues very seriously and am not aware of further problems since then. Machine translation was not listed as something to be watched out for (unless I missed that mention somewhere) and until now I was not aware about it, thank you for pointing it out. I would like to re-draft the article and would you be able to take a look at it to make sure it fits the rules this time? Gryffindor (talk) 17:09, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Accept reason:

Accept per rewrite of Aoi Oshitayashiki and discussion below. Moneytrees🍔(Talk) 22:00, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Direct translations are derivative works and should not be copied in. The guidelines on copyright issues may not all explicitly say translations of copyrighted sources are not allowed, but they are included under the "do not copy text from other sources" umbrella. You can still edit the "User:" space, and could create a rewrite of the article at a subpage like User:Gryffindor/rewrite. I could even restore the references from the deleted article if you want me to. If you can create a rewrite with not copyright issues, it would do a lot in getting you unblocked. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 19:10, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A concern I have here is also about using machine translations, even you write in your own words. I don't know if you speak Japanese or not, but if you don't and can't verify the translation is accurate yourself, you shouldn't be writing articles based on sources in a language you can't speak. Galobtter (pingó mió) 01:29, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite

[edit]

I've checked the rewrite and it seems free of copyright issues, and I am considering unblocking. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 04:15, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Certainly, I would like everything to be in order as well. Gryffindor (talk) 21:40, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The article Gaan people has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I'm stumped honestly. The only mention I can make of such a people is in the works of travel writer James Dorsey, which leads me to believe he's either got the name wrong (charitable version) or that he lies like a rug (uncharitable version). I balk at using a single reference to support the existence of an entire ethnic group, especially a single source from a travel writer, not an ethnographer or similar academic.

Masanao of Kyoto

[edit]

Hi there,

I am the author of the Masanao page. Just to let you know that the conventional way that this artist is mentioned is as follows:

‘Masanao of Kyoto’

This is because we do not know his actual name (‘Masanao’ was likely the artist name rather than birth name), and because there was another artist by the same name in another part of Japan, so this is an important disambiguating.

Unfortunately, when I created this article, issues were raised with this standard (as used for a hundred years of relevant art history) nomenclature, and I was forced to change it to ‘Masanao (Kyoto)’.

Just some context for you! 172.103.243.32 (talk) 06:20, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled right granted

[edit]

Hi Gryffindor, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! œ 05:28, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Palace Basilica has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search did not show it notable in itself (which is maybe why there is no Turkish article) - no objection to merge

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved content from Tateyama, Chiba into another page. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content (here or elsewhere), Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
